Dornfelder - second most popular German grape variety

Dornfelder is a new breed between Heroldrebe and Helfensteiner from 1955 and is meanwhile one of the most popular German red wines. The Dornfelder vine was approved in 1980 and is now grown in almost all wine-growing regions in Germany. The front runners by far are the Palatinate and Rheinhessen. In total, the vineyard area planted with Dornfelder in Germany is about 8,000 hectares. This makes Dornfelder the second most cultivated red grape variety in Germany after Pinot Noir .

Donfelder red wine - delicately fruity to spicy-markant

The colour-intensive Dornfelder grapes were originally grown mainly as a colouring agent for blending with other grape varieties. In the meantime, however, Dornfelder is increasingly being vinified as a single variety due to its qualities. Depending on their ageing and maturity, Dornfelder wines can range from delicately fruity to spicy and distinctive. They are generally dark red in colour, rich in tannins, medium-bodied, moderately acidic and delight the palate with sour cherry aromas. In short: red wines made from Dornfelder taste good, can be stored well and are suitable for barrique ageing.  
Dornfelder wines are available in different quality levels. Various awards prove that not only simple wines but also more and more top wines are pressed from Dornfelder grapes.

Dornfelder wine - easy to care for and high-yielding

The German wine Dornfelder is a low-maintenance and high-yielding grape variety, which also reaches maturity in climatically less favorable locations. To achieve good wine qualities, however, the yield of the Dornfelder vines must be consistently regulated through pruning.
