What is dry wine?

The term dry wine is a rough designation for wines whose sugar content is prescribed by law. A maximum of 4 g/l residual sugar is allowed by law, whereby a wine with 9 g/l is also considered a dry wine if the total acidity is 2 g/l lower than the residual sugar. This means little sugar, but a lot of alcohol. Grapes on vines in vineyards around the world enjoy the sun and produce sugar. This is converted into alcohol during the fermentation of the yeast bacteria. The longer this process goes on, the less sugar remains. A dry wine is fermented. Sparkling wine is somewhat sweeter, as the prescribed residual sugar content may be between 17 and 35 g/l.

Grape varieties for dry wine

Dry is the most common variety in which wine is presented. Whether white wine, red wine, rosé wine or even dessert wine - there is hardly a dry wine type that does not exist. Dry wine does not stop at grape varieties either. The German wine queen Riesling is mostly pressed in dry dress. Wines from Bordeaux are basically dark, dry wines. White wines from the grape varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Pinot gris are considered ideal grapes for dry white wines with fresh minerality and fine acidity. The parade discipline for dry wines, however, is red wine. Almost every grape variety, Malbec, Syrah, Montepulciano, Merlot to name a few, find their calling as dry red wines. Powerful, smooth and fruity aromatic wines have been popular for centuries. Why stop now when the quality has never been higher, the selection never greater and the dryness never truer? Exactly!

A dry Italian wine from the Cantine San Marzano of the top class, to experience what it means to be dry.

Dry red wine - liquid pleasure

Liquid and yet dry - red wine can do that. And extremely tasty. Because what is generally referred to as dry red wine refers to the residual sugar content in wine made from red grapes. With a maximum of 4 grams of fruit sugar per litre, spice, acidity, alcohol content, fruit and tannins play the main roles in dry red wines. A harmonious interplay that draws wine drinkers worldwide into a pleasurable spell. Whether solo, with a meal, for cooking or sharing - dry red wine is a noble addition for precious occasions. So always.

Dry red wine - little sugar, lots of flavour

The difference between dry red wines and sweet ones lies in the residual sugar content. A maximum of 4 g/l is permissible for the taste indication dry. In exceptional cases also up to 9 g/l, provided that the acid is 2g lower than the residual sugar. Nevertheless, even dry red wines can have a sweet note if the acidity and tannins are extremely low. However, other aromas and flavours are dominant. Fruity berries, intense spice and hearty roasted aromas are part of the recurring flavor profile, often joined by the unmistakable wood note of barrique aging. Full-bodied and vividly dark in color, a rich bouquet pours forth with spirited hints of the terroir. The alcohol warms the palate and adds to the coziness of a glass of dry red wine. For minutes, the tannins linger noticeably on the taste buds, prolonging the experience of each sip. Dry red wines are a benevolent experience that tells an age-old story, glass by glass. About the taste of the world and the wine that communicates it.

Dry wine specialities from all over the world

Dry red wines can be found all over the world. From latitude to longitude, winemakers give their treasures everything they have to make the local climate, soils, vineyard and cellar work palpable to everyone. Barolo in Italy, Malbec from Argentina, Bordeaux wines or Zweigelt from Austria. Dry red wine is diverse yet united in the vast wine world.

Country-specific dry red wine specialities:

  • Germany:  With Pinot Noir, Trollinger and Dornfelder, you can find grape varieties that thrive magnificently even in German wine-growing regions that are not necessarily ideal for dry red wine in terms of location. Especially vineyards at the Ahr and Baden deliver fruity dry red wines of highest quality.
  • France: Who does not know them, the strong red wines from Bordeaux. Grenache, Pinot noir, Syrah, Merlot and many other grape varieties grow around the Chateaus, just waiting to inspire wine connoisseurs with their velvety interplay.
  • Italy: Sun-kissed and full of freshness, the grape varieties Primitivo, Sangiovese, Barbera, Nero d'Avola and Negroamaro enjoy the fertile terroir of Italy. Barolo wines from Piedmont, in particular, are worth trying for accomplished dry reds.
  • Spain: Blessed with abundant hours of sunshine and little rainfall, the Spanish climate provides ideal conditions for the production of dry Spanish red wine. Grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Graciano, Syrah, Bobal and Cabernet Sauvignon grow in the rural areas of Rioja or la Manchas.
  • Austria: Technically at the highest level and qualitatively at the spearhead of European viticulture, the vintners from Austria present us with dry red wines from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, both of which have made the wine world sit up and take notice with their fruity aromas and character during the past few years.
  • Australia: Down Under, there are also top red wines, which are vinified dry from the grape varieties Shiraz, the most important variety in Australia, and Cabernet Sauvignon. One could think that Australian wines are bursting with energy - in fact, dry red wines from Australia are very elegant and perfectly balanced.
  • South Africa: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot are the leading grape varieties for dry red wine at the Cape of Good Hope. With their own character and complexity, wines from South Africa stand tall among wine connoisseurs.
  • Argentina: On the foothills of the Andes, in the Mendoza region, Malbec, Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon line the vineyards and experience warm days and crisp nights that awaken the grapes' full potential. Dry red Malbec wines in particular are considered an absolute specialty by locals and wine lovers alike.
  • USA: Old vines in the new world; Zinfandel, known as Primitivo in the old world, Merlot and Pinot noir have found a new, homely home in California to Oregon, where they deliver great results. Because even though you might think everything in the United States is sweet and fortified with sugar - the winemakers know what really matters in a dry red wine.

A good dry red wine with dinner

A rich meal, a cosy round, a dry red wine - the harmony that a round and dark red wine brings to the table is not to be underestimated. Dry red wine shows its full potential especially with spicy dishes. Dark meat, grilled steak, braised roast all offer an optimal environment for strong red wines. Italian dry red wines and Mediterranean cuisine with pizza, pasta and polenta are also an inseparable duo. An incomparable taste experience opens up with the combination of chocolate and dry red wine. And if you're looking for something else to pair food and drink, let me tell you: it's all cheese.

Things to know about dry red wine

What is dry red wine?

A red wine is dry when the residual sugar content is 4 g/l or less. The sugar is of natural origin and comes from the grapes. During fermentation, the sugar transforms into alcohol and leaves only little residual sugar, if not stopped earlier to vinify sweet or semi-dry wine. On the other hand, dry red wines have plenty of tannins and a pleasant acidity, which, in combination with the rather high alcohol content, shape the character of the wine.

How do you serve dry red wine?

Dry red wine is served at a drinking temperature between 16 and 18 °C and in a bulbous red wine glass.

How long can dry red wine be stored?

Most dry red wines are sold ready to drink and do not require any further storage. Stored in a cool, dark, temperature-resistant place, such wines will keep for up to 2 years. However, horizontal storage is only necessary for wines with corks, wines with screw caps can also be stored vertically. Dry red wines with storage potential, on the other hand, can be stored for decades.

How long does an open bottle of dry red wine last?

The shelf life of an opened bottle depends on the fill level. If the wine bottle is still almost full, the dry red wine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. A half-full bottle is still durable after 4 days.

How is dry white wine made?

You want to buy traditionally produced dry white wine? Then you are at the right place in our organic certified wine shipping . We offer our customers high-quality white wine , in the production of which the guidelines are strictly observed.

Before the wine is processed, the vines are harvested. Known also under the term "harvest". Before the best, dry white wine can be filled into the wine glasses ready to drink, some time passes. Vinification comprises several processing steps.

The white wine production begins with the mashing. Then the wine is pressed, followed by enrichment (if permitted in the respective wine country), sulphurisation and fermentation. The main fermentation period lasts 6 to 8 days. Later, racking and transfer to other containers take place. Only then can the young wine "rest" and mature (maturation).

During fermentation, the different flavours are created:

  • Dry white wine or dry wine is obtained when the must is completely fermented.
  • If fermentation is interrupted prematurely, depending on the amount of unfermented residual sugar, either semi-dry white wine, sweet white wine or even sweet white wine is obtained.

Vinello recommendation: Popular dry white wines

Which wine is your favorite? We don't know, but we would like to suggest two very popular dry white wines that every white wine lover should definitely try. How about an excellent Italian white wine, dry and fruity?

Our recommendation is: "Vinkl Sauvignon South Tyrolean". With this you buy a dry DOC white wine, vintage 2016, from the winery Cantina Terlan. The popular white wine from South Tyrol provides an aromatic finish and can be enjoyed with many great dishes. A fantastic "asparagus wine", which can also be served with "cheese tasting".

The "Chardonnay vom gelben Löss" (Chardonnay from the yellow loess) is not at all "stuffy", but acidic, fresh and fruity. The dry white wine from Weingut Spiess from Rheinhessen (Germany) is characterized by its natural carbonic acid. A substantial, aromatic wine from the wine year 2014, which is wonderfully suitable as a gift for good friends or business partners.
