Because standing still is not an option for viticulture between Mesopotamia and Egypt. Since the beginning of time, that is, since the Bible teaches us to drink wine, viticulture has been a constant part of the culture there. No matter which people it is. Because taste is debatable, but all the better to toast to it - enjoy an even more grandiose glass of wine from Israel.

Wine from Israeli settlements

Wine from the Middle East - that is tradition, history and modernity at the same time. What used to be mass-produced wines for religious ceremonies have, thanks to the strengthening of viticulture since the 19th century, become quality wines that are in a league with the best from Europe and overseas. On the approximately 5000 hectares of Israeli wine-growing area, pure and powerful red wines, fresh and filigree white wines and intoxicating sparkling wines are produced, all vinified from noble grape varieties of the old world. Cultivated viticulture is made possible by the high altitudes, where the usually dry and hot climate is tempered by cool winds and rainfall. Together with the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the high altitudes create a Mediterranean climate that provides ideal conditions for grape varieties of all colors to grow and flourish in full glory.

Grape varieties and wines of the Israeli viticulture

Viticulture in Israel, perhaps with the exception of Argaman, has no indigenous grape varieties and thus relies entirely on the cultivation of imported grape varieties. Above all Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Syrah and Merlot produce excellent results and earned awards from the highest places. A result that is due to the modern understanding of quality wine and innovative cultivation and cellar work. A trend-setting movement that has recently put Israeli wine on the radar of all sorts of wine connoisseurs. As a result, the portfolio of Israeli wine enjoyment knows no bounds. From red wine and white wine to dessert wine and fortified wine, wine from Israel represents diversity and openness.

Kosher wine

Wine from Israel is often a great unknown to many people outside the country. Possibly because Israeli wine is often kosher and is therefore found in the trade under specialties and therefore in other corners than conventional wine. The addition kosher in the context of wine is based only on a few interventions that do not specifically distinguish the wine from Israel from other wines. Only three conditions must be met for the wine to be considered kosher:

  • Grapes may only be harvested from the 4th year of the vine's existence. In addition, there must be a harvest break every 7 years.
  • The equipment used to harvest the grapes must be cleaned under the supervision of a rabbi.
  • A portion of the yield must be given away. Often a small percentage is poured away as a symbolic gesture.

Our VINELLO recommendation

Yarden Mount Hermon Red - Golan Heights Winery

This purple cuvée from Golan Heights Winery combines delightful aromas of sour cherries, blackberries, plums and wild berries with a smooth and fruity body. Rounding out each sip of this dry red wine is an elegant acidity composition that stems from the coldest appellation in the Galilee at 1200 meters. Aged in both steel tanks and barrique barrels, the Yarden Mount Hermon Red invites you to enjoy a leisurely glass for many occasions.

Wine from Israel

Wines from the Golan Heights may not be declared as wines from Israel. Due to the international law of the European Union, the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967 are not recognized as part of the Israeli state. Among them, the Golan Heights are included. And since the designation of origin must be both correct and not misleading, the designation wine from Israel is not permitted for wines from the Golan Heights. Alternatively, wines from the Golan Heights may be called "product from the Golan Heights (Israeli settlement)".
