Syrah wine - from France to the end of the world

Syrah is a grape variety of the world.& A cross between Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza, Syrah has its origins in the northern Rhône Valley, where it has led a leisurely life as a leading variety and throughout France as a blending partner, especially with Grenache and Mourvèdre. With about 70,000 hectares, Syrah is one of the most cultivated varieties in France. Logically, the grape was soon exported all over the world.

Syrah is not particularly demanding and likes it quite warm. Ideal for the mostly arid conditions in Australia. Within only 30 years it became the most important grape on the other side of the world under the now common name Shiraz. In contrast to the French style, Australian Syrah wines present themselves with fruity richness and high alcohol content. In France tannin-rich and with noticeable acidity, in Australia rich in content and extract. Completely different, yet the same.

Whether USA, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand, Chile, Italy. There is hardly a country in which Syrah wine is not popular, pressed and drunk. For wine enjoyment in faraway countries, it is worth looking at the following synonyms for Syrah: Shiraz, Hermitage, Sirac, Syra, Schiras, Nerreto di Saluzzo, Marsanne Noir, Entournerin, Antournerein Noir, Candive, Blasamina and Biaune.

Known Vino!

  • The origin of the Syrah vine has long been disputed. The Iranian city of Shiraz, Sicily with the ancient city of Syracuse and the northern Rhône Valley claimed to be the origin of the noble grape. It was only DNA analysis that led to the conclusion that Syrah most likely originated in France.
  • Syrah is one of the few grape varieties to have a feminine name - la Syrah.
  • The difference between Syrah and Shiraz, from the point of view of the wine world, lies in the style of the wines. Syrah wines are vinified according to the French style, that is, elegant, acidic and structured with low alcohol, while Shiraz represents the overseas style and thus powerful and high alcohol wines.

What does Syrah red wine taste like?

The Syrah grape variety is spread all over the world. Accordingly, the taste of red wine varies from country to country. Basically, Syrah is considered full-bodied and smooth, with a dark and powerful color. Syrah is elegant. With a vital acidity, the tannic wine tends to be lean and less alcoholic. Spicy and bittersweet berry aromas, from wild berries and sour cherries, delight the nose with a broad bouquet.

Syrah red wine from hot regions, on the other hand, has more bang in the bottle. Opulent body and a high alcohol content make the wine from Spain, Italy and Australia, for example, a strong, occasionally residual sweet and full-bodied candidate for those who like it a bit stronger. The nose is dominated by a variety of wild berries, as well as pepper and plum.

Cultivation and quality

Syrah is mainly grown in France (about 70,000 ha) and Australia (about 44,000 ha). Well-known wine regions of France are the Rhône Valley (Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Cornas), Languedoc and Gaillac. Other stocks of Shiraz are cultivated in Spain (about 20,000 ha), Argentina (about 13,000 ha), California (about 10,000 ha), South Africa (about 10,000 ha), Italy (about 7,000 ha). Partially tiny cultivation areas in Canada, Cyprus, Mexico, Algeria and Switzerland, make the Syrah one of the most cultivated grape varieties in the world. The red wine has established itself in the last decade in the wine nobility and is considered among wine connoisseurs as a noble vine.

The grape variety is late sprouting and thus protected from late frost. Nevertheless, Syrah is mainly grown in sunny places, because the grape is already sensitive to light moisture and cold and prefers mainly hot terroir. A delicate touch is required when harvesting. If Syrah is harvested too early, the wine takes on a bitter, green note. Harvested too late, the acidity and fruity aroma are noticeably reduced. With optimal timing, you will get excellent and balanced wines for you to enjoy. With friends, with loved ones, take a sip of joie de vivre with a glass of Syrah.
