Franconia

(129)

Along the Main River lies the medium-sized wine-growing region of Franconia. Strong, dry Franconian wine and the Bocksbeutel are characteristic of this quiet and beautiful region. Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are the preferred white grape varieties.

Franconian Wine from the Main

The Franconian wine region offers not only exquisite wine enjoyment but also a beautiful green landscape that invites hiking. In addition, the locals celebrate excellent wine festivals where Franconian wine flows incessantly. Between Aschaffenburg in the west and Bamberg in the east lies Würzburg as the center of the Franconian vineyards. The vineyards along the Main enjoy many hours of intense sunlight and sometimes offer steep slopes. Dry white wines in the Bocksbeutel are the specialty of Franconian winemakers. And anyone who has not yet tried the Silvaner from Franconia can look forward to a robust, charismatic white wine.

Silvaner Wine from Franconia

No question about it: Silvaner is the leading grape variety for Franconian wines. The green Silvaner grape is demanding, subtle, but consistently productive, always fresh and often finely acidic. It is a cross between the Traminer and Austrian White grape varieties. The soils in which the vines grow are extremely important and shape the flavor for the white wine variety. For example, clay soils often yield a fairly neutral Silvaner. The soils of the Franconian vineyards are usually different. Shell limestone, Keuper, and sandstone give Franconian wine a particularly expressive and spicy character. In the glass, there is a powerful Silvaner that exudes a fruity and sometimes earthy bouquet. Silvaner wine is characterized by its suitability for everyday use and is therefore an excellent companion for many dishes.

Bacchus is a Guest at Franconian Wine Festivals

Bacchus is the Roman god of wine, fertility, and revelry. He goes back to the Greek god Dionysus, who received much cultural and historical attention and significance. The Bacchus grape variety is a cross between Silvaner, Riesling, and Müller-Thurgau. The plump and green grape achieves good yields and delivers a high must weight. Generally, the vine that produces a pale yellow wine is less in demand in Germany. But in Rheinhessen and in the Franconian wine region, the largest vineyard areas with the divine grape variety can be found. Together with the Palatinate, around 1,600 ha are planted with Bacchus. At the wine festivals in Franconia, Bacchus must of course not be missing. It is usually enjoyed semi-dry here. In March, the wine festivals in Franconia begin and extend over delicious months until November. Furthermore, they are not only popular with the locals but attract many tourists every year. They enjoy the exceptional quality of Franconian wines, such as Bacchus. At the same time, extensive wine culture is celebrated while the enjoyment of exquisite drops is in the foreground.

Franconian Grape Varieties

The Franconian wine-growing area is especially known for its white grape varieties. Unlike other German wine-growing regions, Riesling is not the first choice for white wine. Instead, the Franconian winemakers primarily vinify white wine from the following grape varieties:

  • (Green) Silvaner
  • Müller-Thurgau
  • Kerner
  • Pinot Blanc
  • Bacchus
  • Scheurebe

More and more red wines from Franconia are becoming fashionable. These red grape varieties are often found in the vineyards around the Main:

  • Regent
  • Dornfelder
  • Pinot Noir
  • Domina
  • Black Riesling

The Bocksbeutel: The Perfect Vessel for Franconian Wine

As characteristic as Franconian wine is, so individual is its vessel: the Bocksbeutel. No, this is not an animal container. The Bocksbeutel from Franconia has a short, narrow neck. The wide, elliptical belly of the bottle serves as its foundation. It is a real eye-catcher and stands out quickly. At the same time, it is as typical for Franconia as it is exclusive for Franconian wines. For over 250 years, the Bocksbeutel (glass) has served as the vessel for Franconian wine. It may also be used for very few selected Baden wines, but the term Bocksbeutel is now protected by copyright. The bottle shape can also be found in Portugal; however, the designation “Bocksbeutel” is not permissible there. Bocksbeutel stands for Franconian quality wines. The capacity of the extraordinary bottle starts at 0.25 l and ends in the Magnum version at 3.0 l. Since 2015, the “Bocksbeutel PS” has been in circulation. This is a slightly redesigned bottle shape that is somewhat slimmer.

Franconia

The Franconian wine-growing region has been established in Germany since the beginning of the Middle Ages. In contrast to the region of Franconia, the eponymous wine-growing area is exclusively located in the Free State of Bavaria. Along the Main, the productive vineyards stretch from Aschaffenburg to the east of Würzburg to Bamberg. The most important product is Franconian wine, a quality wine that is usually traded in the typical Bocksbeutel. The Franconian winemakers specialize in white wine. A special focus and reputation here is the Silvaner – fresh, fruity, fabulous. The mineral-rich soils in the wine-growing area give Franconian wine a special expression and character. The climate is mostly continental. The average annual temperature is 9°C.
